ST. PAUL, Minn. -- On paper, it was a very good result. But the Sabercats left the University of Northwestern feeling gypped after a late goal cost them the game.

Goals from Taylor Moses and Amy Montgomery weren't enough for MBU, as the powerful Northwestern Eagles took home a 3-2 win at Reynolds field.

  • Result: Maranatha 2-3 Northwestern
  • Venue: Reynolds Field, University of Northwestern
  • Location: St. Paul, Minnesota
  • Attendance: 60
  • Record: MBU (1-1-0), UNW (1-2-0)

The Eagles announced their intentions just 12 minutes in when Megan Moeller drilled a shot from the corner of the box into the top corner to give the hosts the lead.

Undeterred, the Sabercats answered just like they did against Faith a week ago. This time, Taylor Moses headed home a corner kick from Sarah Bagin. One each.

Just past the half-hour mark, Estefani Hanson let loose from 25 yards and saw her effort slam off the post before going in. The Eagles had brought their firepower and they looked menacing on their home field.

But just like that, the Sabercats answered again. Alexis Sponable sent a through ball in on goal for Amy Montgomery, who finished into the bottom-left corner from inside the box. It was Sponable's second assist of the season, Montgomery's second goal, and the Sabercats had survived the Eagle's attack by leveling the score before halftime.

The Eagles were in the mood to score, but just when it seemed like their second-half onslaught was pointless, Amanda Kocurek slammed in the finishing touches on a 3-2 win with less than four minutes left. Sponable had a chance to tie it up a minute later, but UNW's goalkeeper made a save that would ultimately save the game. At the end of a hard-fought 90 minutes, the Eagles had secured their first win of the season in dramatic fashion.

MBU Starters: 0- Wright, 6- Montgomery (C), 8-Bishop, 11- Torres, 13- Bagin (C), 14- Sponable (C), 15- Massey, 16-Vander Pluym, 17- Moses, 19- Steuerwald, 20- Hassenplug
