Alumni Day 2018 Review

Alumni Day 2018 Review

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Alumni Weekend marks a highlight of the MBU calendar each year, and the 2018 edition of the sports contests just added to the enjoyment of the weekend.

Some 42 alumni from the Women's Volleyball, Women's Soccer, and Men's Soccer programs donned the Blue and Gold, and the Alumni teams took the win in two of the three contests.

Women's Volleyball (Alumnae 3-1 Sabercats - 22-25, 25-6, 26-24, 25-21)

The Alumnae from the Women's Volleyball program returned a star-studded group that featured five NCCAA All-Americans. It was a talented squad with decorated careers:

The Women's Volleyball scrimmage is typically a four-set scrimmage regardless of set scores, as both the collegians and the alumnae rotate their squad throughout. The Sabercats took the first set by a score of 25-22, then the Alumnae answered with three consecutive wins, 25-6, 26-24, and 25-21.

Women's Soccer (Alumnae 0-2 Sabercats)

In the first of the two soccer matchups, a young and promising Sabercats team got things started off on the right foot when Ali Hernandez calmly finished a breakaway from inside the box past a sliding Korinne Israel, who played goalkeeper for the Alumnae. The goal came within five minutes of kickoff.

That lead would hold until the final 10 minutes when Alexis Sponable smashed a penalty kick into the top-right corner of the net to give the current Sabercats team the 2-0 win.

The Alumnae Women's Soccer team also had a formidable squad, boasting five NCCAA All-Americans:

Men's Soccer (Alumni 3-1 Sabercats)

In the final contest of the day, the Men's Soccer Alumni team struck first with a familiar sight: a calm, somewhat-apologetic finish from Wira Wama from inside the box. Wama collected a rebound from a Brett Cournoyer shot and simply passed it into the corner of the goal.

The Sabercats made it 1-1 shortly into the second 30-minute period. Caleb Hockema's forward run was rewarded with an assist when he played a teasing low cross behind the Alumni back line into the path of Kyle Cummins. Cummins got the better side of his defender and knocked it in at the far post to level the scrimmage.

About 15 minutes later, the Alumni struck back when All-American goalkeeper Charlie Leeds traded the goalie gloves for a stint at center forward. After Michael Bagin chased down a ball in the Sabercats' penalty area, he crossed it into the path of Leeds, who placed his shot low into the corner from 12 yards out. Alumni 2-1 Sabercats.

The final goal of the game happened two minutes into the third period when Todd Howard's inviting pass into the box found the right foot of Taylor Pill, who fired his shot into the roof of the net from 10 yards away to finish the scoring and give the Alumni a 3-1 win.

The Alumni team consisted of 21 players, 11 of which were members of the 2014 national championship team:
